Day One Programs

Courses to be completed at base camp prior to going in the backcountry

Lay of the Land
This program is part of your crew's first exposure to the Boone and Crockett Club, the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch (TRMR), and the surrounding landscape. A historical introduction of the Club's mission and vision, the purpose of the TRMR and the conservation education program will be presented. Also covered is an introduction to the Rocky Mountain Front local communities and culture, wildlife and the habitat types found in the ecosystem.

GPS, Map & Compass
Join us to learn how to use a map, compass, and GPS to help you navigate across the Montana landscape.  Learn how to determine which map best fits your travel needs by understanding how to read the map, map scale, the differences in what information each present and how to interpret the information. Once you have learned how to find your direction of travel using a compass and combine your map and compass skills to map your travel route as you take a short hike across the landscape we will learn how to use a topographical map and compass. Explore how to use this tool to mark and find locations, routes, distances, travel time or even the best fishing and hunting times for your location. Combine your skills and take part in an orienteering challenge course.

Be Bear Aware
The Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem has both black and grizzly bears. The objective of this training is to ensure scouts know what to do to reduce human bear conflicts when in the backcountry, and to provide biological information specific to bears in Montana.

Leave No Trace Camping
This training provides participants with hands-on training in Leave No Trace skills and techniques specific to the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex and surrounding lands when camping.
