More About MOHAB

The Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch (TRMR) or The Ranch as it is affectionately called by Boone and Crockett Club members is 6,000 acres that lies in the foothills of the east slope of the Rocky Mountains west of Dupuyer, Montana. The property abuts over one million acres of national forest and Wilderness. This area contains habitat for elk and mule deer. Additionally, whitetail deer, cougar, and grizzly and black bears regularly use this property and bighorn sheep and Rocky Mountain goats occur in adjacent national forest lands.

The Ranch serves as the base of operations for MOHAB – Montana High Adventure Base; the name established by the High Adventure Committee for this location. Similar to Philmont, crews would depart the base for pre-established treks into the Bob Marshall Wilderness, a 1,009,356 acre wilderness located in Northwestern Montana approximately 75 miles west of Great Falls. The "Bob" straddles the Continental Divide with elevations ranging from 4,000 feet along the valley floors to more than 9,000 feet at mountain summits. This vast wilderness is seven (7.34) times larger than Philmont (137,493 acres) with established wilderness trails. Trailheads to the “Bob” are within walking distance of the Ranch property.

The MOHAB program is an eight-day program that includes an introduction to the surrounding environment (The Rocky Mountain Front and the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex), pre-trek training, and a 5-day or 4 ½-day or 4-day trek. The trek lengths are dependent on program options that each crew selects as part of their overall trek program.

Crew Size. Due to the remoteness of the wilderness in northcentral Montana and USFS Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex regulations on party size, MOHAB crew size is restricted to no more than 13 people including at least 3 adult advisors (over 21 years of age). This standard must be strictly enforced. Each crew is required to have a majority of youth participants with a maximum number of 4 adults (over 21) per crew.

Units registering for MOHAB treks will be notified about the minimum 3-adult requirement. Consideration will be given to providing a young adult (over 20 years old) as the third adult provided the other two advisors are at least 21 years old.
